Numbers to Know 11/21/24

Here are 3 numbers that are driving conversations amongst policymakers, legislators, and lobbyists in Florida's Capital City.

Is Higher Education Ready for the AI Revolution? As the landscape of higher education evolves with emerging technologies, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a focal point in shaping the future of learning and administration. A recent survey by Inside Higher Ed reveals enthusiasm for adopting and investing in AI while presenting a significant gap in AI preparedness among higher education institutions.

According to Inside Higher Ed’s third annual survey of campus technology officers (CTOs), most express serious concerns about their institutions' readiness to adopt and integrate AI technologies. Only 9% of CTOs believe higher education is adequately prepared to manage AI's transformative impact. The reluctance and lack of preparedness to embrace AI stems from administrators' and educators' concerns about AI’s impact on academic integrity, performance, and cheating.

Higher education is at a crossroads. To fully leverage AI’s potential while safeguarding academic standards, institutions need investments in training, infrastructure, and ethical frameworks. As policymakers in Tallahassee and beyond continue to shape the future of education, their decisions will significantly impact how institutions choose to integrate AI. Considering these trends when moving into future legislative sessions, ensuring equitable access to AI tools for students and faculty while addressing data privacy and academic integrity concerns will require strategic investments and clear guidelines from policymakers.
