As election day, November 5, 2024, nears, over 10 million Floridians will be casting their votes. Floridian voters will not only be electing a U.S. President, 29 Congressional members, 120 State House members, 20 Florida Senate members, but also voting on six proposed constitutional amendments.
At Catalyst Strategies, we have taken the time to break down the six proposed constitutional amendments that will be on the ballot, helping you make informed decisions that could shape the future of our state. Our nonpartisan guide offers clear explanations to understand the purpose and implications of each amendment, a detailed breakdown of what your vote means, and arguments supporting and opposing each one.
The six proposed amendments, detailed within our guide, made it to the ballot through one of the following methods:
Joint Resolution by the Florida Legislature: The sole method by which legislatures can propose amendments to the State Constitution is through a joint resolution. To pass, the resolution must receive a three-fifths majority vote in both houses. Amendments 1, 2, 5, and 6 were placed on the 2024 ballot through this process.
Citizens’ Initiative: For a citizen’s initiative to be placed on the ballot, a certain number of petitions signed by registered Floridian voters for the proposed amendment are needed to be eligible. The Florida Constitution states the required number of signatures is eight percent of the voters from the last presidential election, with signatures coming from at least half of the state’s congressional districts. Amendments 3 and 4 were placed on the 2024 ballot through citizens’ initiatives.
In Florida, all proposed constitutional amendments require a 60% majority vote to pass, regardless of how they made it to the ballot.
By staying informed and understanding the implications of each proposed constitutional amendment, we at Catalyst Strategies hope your vote will contribute to shaping a prosperous future for Florida.
